Now Offering mobile urgent care services Friday to Sunday 4pm to midnight
The practice provides end of life services for dogs, cats, pocket pets, and exotics only at this time. If diagnostics are needed to determine a diagnosis for your pet, an appointment with their regular veterinarian may be recommended. While an examination is essential for evaluation of any pet, it may not fully determine a pet's quality of life. Many senior pets may still have some good quality of time left with a correct diagnosis and appropriate treatments.
The practice service area covers towns within the Cowichan Valley, including Ladysmith to the A&W, Chemainus, Duncan, Cobble Hill, Shawnigan Lake, Mill Bay, and Lake Cowichan. Owners residing north of Ladysmith should contact one of the mobile practices in Nanaimo. Owners residing on the Malahat or further south should contact one of the mobile practices in Victoria and Langford. If you have an emergency, please contact an emergency hospital or your closest veterinarian.
Every pet receives both an over-the-phone and an in person consultation and evaluation. Assistance in determining whether it's time to say goodbye will be provided. Humane euthanasia may be pursued due to uncontrolled pain, progressive illness, poor quality of life, inability to manage health conditions, or behavioral reasons. Convenience euthanasia is not performed by this practice. Once a decision has been made that a pet's declining health or poor quality of life cannot be improved and humane euthanasia should be considered, an appointment can be scheduled. This appointment can be cancelled or changed at any time. Some pets may experience a sudden rapid decline, while others may have periods where they rally and necessitate delaying the appointment.

The most common option is to perform the euthanasia at the pet's house and can be performed indoors or outside. If outside, a shady spot is recommended to prevent overheating. You may want to have a bed or blanket for your pet to lay on.
An alternative to performing the euthanasia at the pet's home is to select another favorite location. This may be another house or a favorite spot. It should be a location your pet is comfortable and happy at that does not cause stress or discomfort. It also needs to be legal for us to be present there and should be done at times of low traffic to the area. This option requires extra planning and needs to be discussed thoroughly prior to the appointment.
After a pet has passed, there are three options. You can choose to bury at home if legal and safe, cremation without return of ashes, or cremation with return of ashes. Guidelines for home burial are available. Transportation is provided for your pet to the crematorium.
All owners have the option to receive a free fur clipping in a small glass vial. If choosing cremation, there are options for paw prints, jewelry, urns, and engravings. Additional items will be added in the future. Memorial items will be personally delivered to your home.
Losing a pet is a very sad and challenging time. There are resources available that may help an owner through this difficult time.
